The Village of Alfred supports its business community, one that plays a vital role in the present-day life and history of this college town. We recognize the Main Street business owners who have a challenge ahead of them to rebuild after the losses of October 29th, and will work with owners, employees and tenants in a proactive way to assure their future success in the village.

Dear Mayor Clark,
The entire Alfred State College community joins me in acknowledging the devastating loss on Main Street this week. By this letter I am informing you and your board that the College stands by to assist you and the business owners who have been so affected by this tragedy. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to expedite the recovery of these businesses on Main Street. We will do anything within our ability to aid the Village or business owners in rebuilding.
On a related note, I would also like to extend our services and resources in a larger discussion of economic recovery for downtown Alfred. Again, Alfred State College stands ready to assist you, your colleagues on the board, and the local business owners to do whatever we can possibly do to help downtown Alfred.

Sincerely,

Alfred University - Letter of Support

Nov. 9, 2009

Mayor Craig Clark
Village of Alfred
West University Street
Alfred, NY  14802

Dear Mayor Clark:

When something as devastating as the Oct. 29, 2009 fire occurs in a community the size of Alfred, we all feel its effects, and Alfred University faculty, staff and students are certainly no exception.

We understand the recovery process will be slow, difficult, and oftentimes frustrating to the property owners, the businesses, and the apartment tenants. Our immediate response – providing clothing, food and shelter to our students displaced by the fire – was a first step toward recovery.  Be assured we are more than willing to be partners with the Village in the arduous process ahead of all of us.

Generations of Alfred University faculty, staff and students chose to call Alfred home during their time here, and they recall with great fondness the sense of community they found. That sense is real, it’s important, and it’s something we want to work with you to continue for those who will come after us.  Together I am certain we can create something even better than before.

Sincerely,
Charles M. Edmondson, Ph.D.
President
